Microchipping is the most reliable, permanent way to identify your pet and reunite you if they ever go missing.

About the size of a grain of rice, the microchip is quickly and easily inserted under the skin during a standard consultation. As long as your contact details are kept up to date in the national database, your pet can always be traced back to you.

Legal Requirements

Dogs

• Compulsory: all dogs over 8 weeks old must be microchipped by law.
• Breeders: puppies must be microchipped and registered to the breeder before reaching 8 weeks.
• Penalties: failure to comply can result in a notice requiring action or a fine of up to £500.

Cats

• Compulsory: all domestic cats must be microchipped before reaching 20 weeks of age.
• Penalties: owners found without a microchip have 21 days to comply or face a fine of up to £500.
• Exception: feral or farm cats with little to no human contact are exempt.

Other companion animals

• Optional but recommended: while not currently required by law for other pets (like rabbits or ferrets), microchipping is strongly advised to help return them safely if they get lost.
