Proper dentistry, done under the microscope.

Full-mouth assessments under general anaesthesia, on-site dental X-rays, and advanced dentistry referrals at Cottam.

How can I prevent dental disease?

Daily brushing is the gold standard of pet care. It stops plaque from turning into rock-hard tartar that requires surgery to remove. The secret is to take it slow and make it a fun, rewarding part of your daily routine.

At Lanes Vets, we don’t just look at teeth, we look at your pet’s overall health. Untreated oral disease is a primary cause of chronic discomfort and can lead to serious secondary health complications affecting internal organs like the heart, kidneys, and liver.

The importance of proactive dental care

In dogs and cats, dental disease often progresses quietly. Because pets instinctively mask signs of pain, oral infections can remain undetected without a professional examination.

  • During a routine check-up, it is impossible to see the plaque and bacteria that accumulate deep beneath the gum line.
  • Bacteria from the mouth can eventually enter the bloodstream (bacteraemia), which may impact the long-term health of the heart, kidneys, and liver.
  • Left untreated, pets can experience chronic inflammation, tooth loss, and oronasal fistulas (painful communications between the oral and nasal cavities).
  • Our primary objective is to identify and treat dental pathology early, ensuring your pet remains comfortable and infection-free throughout their life.

Why general anaesthesia and X-rays are essential

A proper, thorough dental assessment is not possible while a pet is awake.

The hidden 60%. Over half of every tooth is hidden under the gum line. X-rays are the only way to find painful hidden problems like FORLs (dissolving teeth) in cats.

Safety first. We understand anaesthesia can be a concern, but your pet’s safety is our absolute priority. We use modern monitoring, one-to-one nursing care, and supportive IV fluids (a drip) as standard for all procedures.

Medical cleaning. A scale and polish isn’t just cosmetic. It removes the mineralised bacteria (calculus) that causes gum inflammation and bone loss.

Advanced dentistry referrals

While we provide routine dental care across all branches, we also offer Advanced Dentistry led by Joanne Daniels BVetMed PGCert(Dent) MRCVS, at our Cottam branch.

Joanne holds post-graduate qualifications in animal dentistry and accepts referrals for complex cases, including:

  • Gingivoplasty for diseased or overgrown gums.
  • Complicated extractions and persistent deciduous (baby) teeth.
  • Full mouth extractions (often required for feline chronic gingivostomatitis).
  • Oral surgery for masses or oronasal fistula repair.
