When you think about visiting the vets, it’s often the veterinary surgeon who first comes to mind. But behind every healthy pet is a wider clinical team, and our Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVNs) play an essential role in supporting your pet throughout every stage of their life.
Our experienced veterinary nurses run a range of dedicated clinics designed to help keep pets happy and healthy, manage ongoing conditions and provide practical, handson support for owners. From weight management and senior health checks to diabetes support, dental care and post-operative checks, nurse clinics give you dedicated time to discuss your pet’s needs and ask questions in a relaxed and supportive environment.
And, of course, if a nurse identifies anything that requires further investigation or treatment, they will always recommend an appointment with one of our veterinary surgeons.
Osteoarthritis is a common condition, particularly in older dogs and cats, which can gradually make everyday activities such as walking, climbing stairs or jumping onto furniture more difficult.
Our specially trained nurses teach you how to provide the best care at home and find new ways to manage your pet’s pain to extend their quality of life, as well as monitor changes in your pet’s comfort and mobility. This may include lifestyle advice, weight management support, and ongoing monitoring to ensure your pet remains as comfortable as possible.
K-Laser therapy may also form part of a pet’s care plan, and something our nurses are experienced in using. This laser treatment uses infrared light and can be particularly helpful for arthritic patients, pets experiencing chronic pain, and some patients with wounds. Treatment is non-invasive, and most pets simply feel a gentle warmth during a session.
As pets grow older, regular monitoring becomes increasingly valuable because small changes can sometimes provide the first indication that something isn’t quite right.
Our After 8 clinics for dogs offer dedicated health checks for our older canines focusing on weight, nutrition, behaviour, quality of life and helping to monitor age related changes.
Our Kitizens clinics for senior cats offer blood pressure monitoring, weight management, nutrition and age-related changes.
These appointments allow our nurses to carry out routine health checks and talk through any subtle changes you may have noticed at home.
Changes in appetite, thirst, mobility, sleeping patterns or behaviour can all be important to mention. By keeping a closer eye on pets in their senior years, we can help identify potential concerns early and support a better quality of life for longer.
Maintaining a healthy weight can make a significant difference to your pet’s overall wellbeing but knowing exactly how much to feed, and how quickly a pet should gain or lose weight, isn’t always straightforward.
Our weight-management clinics are suitable for pets that need to lose or gain weight. During appointments, our RVNs can weigh your pet, take body condition measurements and create a tailored feeding and exercise plan.
Most importantly, you don’t have to do it alone. Regular nurse appointments provide ongoing encouragement, support, and the opportunity to adjust the plan as your pet progresses.
Being told that your dog or cat has diabetes can feel daunting, particularly when you’re suddenly faced with new routines, medication and dietary changes.
At our diabetes clinics, a nurse will guide you through every stage of your pet’s care, including diet, weight management, exercise, blood glucose monitoring and insulin administration.
Having a familiar, knowledgeable nurse available to answer questions can make managing diabetes at home feel far more achievable and less overwhelming.
Parasite prevention is an important part of routine healthcare for pets, but the right approach can vary depending on species, age and lifestyle.
During our parasite clinics, our nurses can discuss flea, tick and worm prevention with you and tailor a plan specifically for your pet. It’s also a great opportunity to ask questions about treatments, seasonal risks and how to keep your pet protected all year round.
Going home after surgery can be an anxious time for owners. Is that wound healing normally? Is your pet resting enough? What should you be watching out for?
Our nurses carry out post-operative checks to make sure your pet is recovering as expected including wound monitoring, bandage changes and appropriate wound care. They can also discuss home care instructions and address any concerns you may have.
Dental health is a key part of your pet’s overall wellbeing, yet it is often overlooked until problems arise.
Our nurse-led dental checks allow us to assess your pet’s mouth, teeth and gums and identify early signs of dental disease such as tartar build-up, bad breath or gum inflammation. This is particularly important, as dental disease can be painful and may affect eating, behaviour and general health if left untreated.
If concerns are found, our nurses can advise on next steps and help you to understand how to maintain good oral hygiene at home.
A visit to the vets can be stressful for some pets. Our confidence clinics (also known as fear-free clinics) are designed to help reduce anxiety and build positive associations with the veterinary environment.
These sessions are gentle, patient-led and tailored to your pet’s individual needs. They may include gradual desensitisation to handling, weighing scales, carriers or clinical equipment, all at a pace your pet is comfortable with.
The aim is simple: to make future visits less stressful for both pets and owners.
Not all pets are cats and dogs, and our nursing team is experienced in supporting a wide range of exotic species, including rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats, chinchillas and birds.
Our exotic clinics provide advice on new pets, health checks, nutrition support and grooming clinics. Because exotic pets often have very specific needs, these dedicated appointments are a valuable opportunity to ensure they are receiving the right care for their species.
Our nurses can help with nail clipping for dogs, cats and other small animals.
They can also assist with anal gland care in dogs and cats where needed. Signs of anal gland problems may include scooting, licking or discomfort around the rear end, although these behaviours can sometimes have other causes too.
In addition, our nurses are happy to support with medication administration. Whether your pet needs tablets, liquids, eye drops or long-term ongoing medication, we can demonstrate safe and stress-free techniques to help make treatment easier at home.
For members of our VIP or VIP Platinum Pet Health Plans, nurse appointments for nail clipping and anal gland care are included at no additional cost.
