Services for the Care of Your Dog

Dogs are known as “Man’s best friend”. Their intelligence, devotion, loyalty and affection mean that they are one of the most popular domestic pets in the UK.

Before you embark on dog ownership, it is worth taking some time to discover which type of breed would suit your lifestyle and family. Dogs vary in size markedly, from Chihuahua to Great Dane, find out how large the breed you are looking at is likely to grow and make sure you have space to provide what the breed needs. The amount of exercise a dog needs also varies by breed, for example working breeds, such as the Border collie or Working Cocker, need to be ‘on the go’ a lot of the time to help stop boredom and resultant behavioural problems. The type of breed you chose is likely to have a big influence on the care your dog needs so make sure to research properly. At Lanes Vets we are happy to discuss the different aspects of a breed even before you get your dog, please ask for help.

In order to keep your dog as healthy as possible we recommend regular vaccinations, flea and tick control and regular worming. At Lanes Vets we offer our VIP Pet Health Plan as a means of spreading the cost of these essential preventative health measure. The Pet Health Plan allows you to pay by monthly direct debit and incorporates savings at the same time. Please ask us for details.

We recommend microchipping as a permanent form of identification. The microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and is inserted under the skin in a similar way to an injection. It is a quick and relatively painless procedure which can be carried out in a normal consultation.

Microchipping will become compulsory for dogs from April 2016, so there is little point delaying – contact your local Lanes Vets surgery to arrange a microchipping appointment today!

At Lanes Vets we recommend that dogs not intended for breeding are neutered. It is worth discussing with your vet when the best time is to neuter your dog. There is more information on neutering in our downloadable information sheets.

Pet Insurance is a cost that should be taken into account when deciding if to get a dog and what breed may be suitable. Pet insurance helps to cover the costs if your pet is ill r injured – it can bring peace of mind at a stressful time. Please ask a member of our team for guidance.
